A tribute to a great team in a great city!: I bought this book expecting to find a few photos of Chicago's ball park and an overload of player photos. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the book thoroughly examined Wrigley Field, its early history, and some enjoyable anecdotal photos and information about the surrounding neighborhood today. I especially enjoyed that the author included information about Chicago history in addition to the examination of Wrigley Field. Many of the historical photographs were new to me, which made my review of the book more enjoyable. Although this book is not comprehensive in nature like some other Baseball "encyclopedias", very few of the Arcadia "Images" books seem to be. I own two other Arcadia titles and at 128 pages, this book gives the reader who enjoys historical photographs a superb value for the money...
A Great History in Pictures: I just got this book...as a life long fan (is there any other kind?) I moved into the neighborhood two years ago. This book is amazing, the old pictures give a wonderful glimpse into Wrigley's history and the new stuff is a great snapshot of the "now". I can't wait to haul this book out in 10-20 years and say this is EXACTLY what Wrigley was like when I lived there!
Not as good as I hoped...: I really wanted to give this book a strong review. I really did. For months I waited for the book to come in; having pre-ordered the book from Amazon.com. Unfortunately my expectations were much higher than the book was able to produce. The book, while offering page after page of photos is short on meaningful text and moreover is short on new - or unearthed photos. If you are searching for new photos or insight - simply put; other offerings will provide you more satisfaction. For hardcore Wrigley fans; A "Day at the Park" "Wrigley Field" by Stuart Shea, and Mark Jacobs latest on the ball park are stronger efforts. It also falls short in the editing department as errors (albiet minor) exist. Perhaps a second edition may include more copy - and research.
Take me out to the friendly confines.: Its sorta sounds like a George Carlin's bit on footbal and baseball. Major league teams are Giants; Then there's the various "bird teams"; Cardinals, Orioles, Bluejays and other assorted beasts devil rays, Marlins, Tigers. Then you have your various uinventive sock name. And there that adopt the noble red man; the Indians. Then there's the nondescript teams; the Astros, Expos, Padres, Mariners. Ya know we are the Cubbies. Yes, a diminuative cuddly creature. We like it that way. And never let anyone tell you that there is a better ballpark the Wrigley field. You simply haven't seen baseball until you been at a day game at Wrigley. Sorry about the lights.
